Is Omar a goner???

There are rumors floating around that Jeff Wilpon is seriously considering firing GM Omar Minaya and replacing him with assistant GM John Ricco. Ricco is known as a very sharp numbers guy but does he have an eye for talent? I am fine with dispensing Minaya who has created a very flawed team despite spending a truck load of money but it needs to be the right guy----Billy Beane is available...

The Mets are now in danger of getting swept in a four game series by the Padres after Bobby Parnell's less then stellar effort yesterday in a 3-1 loss. Parnell, given a shot at the starting lineup due to the Jon Niese injury, came up small. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings and was yanked when he reached his pitch count limit.

The Mets found virtually zero offense once again and are now eight below the .500 mark. This season is starting to feel like Chinese water torture to me.

I can only hope we are getting all the bad luck, injuries, mental lapses and physical errors done this year instead of next....

K-Rod blows it...

Chalk up another dismal performance by the Mets and yet another in a series of mounting losses for a club that appears headed for the golf course once again in October. The Mets new stud closer entered the ninth with a 2-1 lead. Looks like a Met victory right? Wrong. K-Rod allowed five runs to blow the game.

In fairness he was the victim of a blown call at the plate, but still....five runs. He has now blown two straight for the Mets and he is aware of it; "The last two outings have been really depressing," Rodriguez said. "Really bad outings. I have to wipe it out and have a short memory."

No, Met fans need a short memory because not just the last two outings have been depressing but the entire season. For that matter the previous two seasons as well...

Mets win a game, lose a pitcher...

That is just the way it goes for the seemingly snake-bitten 2009 New York Mets; take one step forward and two steps back. During yesterdays impressive 9-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field, the Mets lost another player for the season. This time the victim was pitcher Jon Niese.

While covering first base in the second inning, Niese managed to completely tear his upper hamstring which will require season ending surgery for the promising young hurler.

So add Niese to the Mets list of injured players. He can now watch from the stands with Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran. If the 2009 Mets have proven anything (other then how ridiculously unlucky one franchise can be) it is that you need quality depth to get through a grinding 162 game schedule...

Now even Johan can't seem to get it done...

One of the few bright spots in this dismal season for the Mets has been the dominant performances by Johan Santana. Last night wasn't one of them as the big guy gave up five earned runs. Actually it would have gotten the job done though if another   bright spot, K-Rod, could have closed the door for Johan--he couldn't.

So we went to extra innings only to be done in by an Albert Pujols grand slam. I will spare you the gory details----it is just another loss in just another lost season for the Mets.

Pagan powers Mets....

The Mets are doing just enough to keep their sowewhat slim playoff hopes alive. Last night at Citi Field, Angel Pagan was the hero with his first ever career grand slam giving the Mets a much needed 9-6 victory over the D-Backs.

The Mets also got some encouraging news as Carlos Beltran hit batting practice last night for the first time and experienced zero discomfort in his knee. Perhaps there is hope???

Another one of "those" losses for the Mets...

This has been a strange and frustrating season for Mets fans. How many games has this team blown due to inexcusable mental and physical errors? Too many. I think back to Luis Castillo dropping a routine pop fly and costing Johan Santana a win. I recall Carlos Beltran not sliding into home earlier this season, getting tagged out and the Mets losing by a run. I could give several other similiar examples but this is painful enough.

Last night was another one of "those" losses. Not games where they were simply outplayed----that happens. It was a game they easily could have won but they flat out blew it. Last night's culprit? Sean Green.

Green came into a tie game in the eighth, no out, runner on first. What did he do? Hit the first batter, walked the second and then proceeded to toss a run scoring wild pitch. Game winning run at that.

Atleast Green realizes his control was a tad off:  "I threw a fastball in the dirt and it got away," said Green, whose streak of eight straight scoreless outings came to an end. "My command was subpar, to say the least. It was one of those bad outings"

Yup.

The Mets keep blowing these games but they are neither good enough nor healthy enough to give these gifts to their opponents and expect to be playing October baseball. The Mets five game winning streak has been replaced by a two game losing streak...

Diamondbacks in town for four---weather permitting....

The Ny Mets will host the Arizona D-Backs tonight to kick off a four game weekend set. After having their five game winning streak snapped in the night cap yesterday by the Rockies, the Mets are now 5 1/2 out of the wild card.

The Mets (49-52) desperately need a strong showing this weekend---61 games remain. It sounds like a lot but they go by quickly. The team has used up most of it's mulligans already by blowing several games earlier that should have been victories. The margin for error for the Mets right now is small.

Ny Mets quick hits 7/31, 8/1, 8/2: 

• The Mets play 19 of their next 26 games at Citi Field

• Jeff Franceour has six multiple hit games in 14 Met appearences

• Luis Castillo is hitting .543 with runners on base since 7/5

• Johan Santana is 59-18 on his career after the All-Star break

• Starting pitching for 7/31: Livan Hernandez vs Doug Davis

Mets keep rolling...

Chalk up another win for the Mets---now four straight after knocking off the Rockies 4-0 last night at Citi Field. The Mets now find themselves 5 1/2 back of the wild card after Mike Pelfrey's outstanding performance. The big righty went 6 1/3 scoreless innings and the Mets are starting to gain confidence and momentum;

"Even before today, everybody was thinking that we're going to make a run at this thing," said Mike Pelfrey, who was the Mets' star after throwing 6-1/3 scoreless innings. "Everybody is pretty confident that after Oct. 4 (the final day of the season) we'll still be playing. Confidence-wise, we feel like we can show up and win. I don't know if I could've said that a few weeks ago.

"We're just playing better baseball right now. We keep this up and we get those (injured) guys back, you watch out. We're going to make a run at this."

I realize I basically wrote the Mets off two short weeks ago (a lot of us did, be honest) and I am still skeptical that they can sustain this as this club has a frustrating way of teasing you, but there is cause for hope. As Pelfrey said, if the Mets walking wounded return, who knows???
