Johan Santana came up big for the New York Mets in a 7-2 opening Day victory against the Florida Marlins today. The Mets new ace came up big in his New York Baseball debut. He went seven innings yielding just two runs on three hits while fanning eight Marlins hitters. He seemed to over match Florida through much of the contest with a lively fastball that often reached 93 mph along with a change up that can make major league hitters look silly.
The Mets were potent on offense as well. Of note Carlos Beltran doubled twice (knees looked fine to me) and David Wright had a huge three run double in the fourth.
The bull pen was impressive with two scoreless innings including a one-two-three ninth for Aaron Heilman.
It is only one game but man does it feel great to get 2007 behind us!
